Even with the not-so-subtle reminders of the plot and characters, The Awakening cannot stand alone. The problem I have is that the author wrote the beginning chapters of the second book, The Awakening, as if it were a stand-alone part of a series and the reader would not have read The Summoning. The Darkest Powers is unequivocally a trilogy not a series, which is not an issue. They relate, not too surprisingly, to my perhaps overly strong opinions about trilogies and series fiction, expressed elsewhere.
